Nelson College for Girls.

Educational research has shown quite conclusively that girls educated in a single sex environment appear to have distinct advantages.   Not only do they achieve better academically but they tend to choose subjects that they may be reluctant to study in a co-ed school, especially the sciences, technology and mathematics at senior level.  As well, they tend to participate more fully in the life of the school, especially in sport, music, drama and dance.

Opportunities for leadership at senior level abound and girls make the most of the training that is given by the school, relishing the opportunity to give back to their school as seniors by assuming these leadership roles.

However some parents worry that, in a single sex school, girls do not have sufficient opportunities for social interaction with the opposite sex.

At Nelson College for Girls our students have the best of both worlds; a single sex education but a close relationship with our brother school, Nelson College.   At senior level some classes are shared taking place on either campus and there are many opportunities in the co-curricular life of the school especially, for shared cultural activities.

Nelson College for Girls has a proud history of 127 years.  The traditions of the College are something that our young women value for they give them a sense of belonging to a family where many fine, successful women have preceded them thus giving them a standard to aspire to.

However the real strength of the College today lies in the calibre of its staff, men and women of the highest professional standards, with strong academic training and a passion to pass on the love and knowledge of their curriculum area to the girls.  Most of all, our staff are proud to be part of this College, love the girls and require of them the highest standards as well as committing themselves to give the girls the very best that an holistic education can offer in any school.

We welcome you to this website and invite you to visit the College to see how the information on this site is translated into a vital community of which your daughter could be a part.

HOUSE DRAMA

This year the House Leaders were given the brief of writing a short play in melodramatic style to include a hero, a villain and someone who needs helping or saving.  To make the competition a bit more complicated they were given particular things that must be included.  Waimea won the competition with "Romeo and Juliet?" and had to include a yellow hat, a large paint brush, the phrase "Yes we can" and a broken brown banana box.  They were also very innovative in their production performing their melodrama in rhyme which was written by one of the students.
