Nelson's sea views, historic buildings, picturesque winding streets, Queens Gardens, Maitai River, Rocks Road and Tahunanui Beach are all striking features of the city.
The combined population of Nelson and the adjacent town of Richmond is approximately 54,600, making it New Zealand's tenth most populous city and one of the fastest growing (latest statistics from the 2006 Census). The city has a hospital, extensive sports and recreation areas, and a range of shops, theatres, galleries and restaurants; all boosted by the increasing buying power of a healthy tourism industry. Nelson enjoys the highest sunshine hours of any city in New Zealand, and a climate that features long sunny days and crisp, clear nights.
The Nelson Region is home to numerous smaller towns and villages, scattered around the edge of the Tasman and Golden Bays, and from Nelson Lakes National Park and the Rainbow Ski Area in the south, to the rural area of Hira north of Nelson City. Total population for Nelson and Tasman is 87,513 (2006 Census).
