About
NEW ZEALAND
New Zealand is a clean, green place to live and study. It has a reputation
for safety and friendliness. English is the primary language spoken by
over 95% of the population, with Māori being the second official language
of New Zealand.
While New Zealand is a relatively young country, it has a rich and fascinating
history that reflects both our Māori and European heritage.
Similar in size and/or shape to Great Britain, Colorado or Japan, New
Zealand has a population of 4.18 million - making it one of the world's
least crowded countries. (Statistics New Zealand - May 2007.)
Featuring vast open spaces filled with stunning rugged landscapes, gorgeous
beaches, often spectacular geothermal and volcanic activity, a temperate
climate and fascinating animal and plant life, it is easy to understand
why New Zealand is such an attractive tourist destination.
New Zealand has a robust free-market economy, largely based around agriculture,
forestry and tourism. Our national currency is the New Zealand Dollar (NZ$),
which is roughly equivalent to US$0.79, AUS$0.85 and €0.52.
