Our house system is an important and vibrant part of Nelson College for Girls. Every student belongs to one of our five houses – Dun, Matai, Maugatapu, Waimea and Whangamoa. Throughout the year the Houses compete in a variety of sporting and cultural activities to earn points to be the top House of the Year. There is much fun and enthusiasm in this competition.
Our school has an extremely strong Music and Drama extra curricular programme. There are always groups practising and competing throughout the year.
In 2013 our Stella Nova choir, under the expert direction of Ms Rebecca Monopoli, won the Regional Big Sing choral competition. The sound of their singing in Nelson Cathedral was inspiring. They are practising at present for the 2014 competition and they are sounding wonderful.
Our jazz band is also an award winning one. Their toe-tapping renditions of well-known compositions are much appreciated by their audiences.
Our students also have a strong reputation in the Sheila Winn Shakespeare competition. Twice in recent years a student from Nelson College for Girls has been selected to join a student visit to the Globe Theatre in London. This is a most prestigious honour.
At Nelson College for Girls there are so many opportunities for students to be involved. The range of sports is extensive.
This year in summer, our school took part in Inter-school competitions for Rowing and Volleyball
In winter we will take part in similar competitions for netball, rugby, and touch to name but a few.
Our students have a wonderful range of activities that they can be involved with. Some of these are highlighted here.
