Nelson College
for Girls - Rocking the House!
 |
When
each student arrives at Nelson College for Girls she is placed into
one of five houses, Dun, Maitai, Maungatapu, Waimea, and Whangamoa.
Whangamoa is a house for the boarding students of our school at Clarice
Johnstone House. |
The five houses - each in distinctive green, red, blue, yellow or purple
colours - then compete in several activities throughout the year, trying
to earn points for their own House, to win the yearly House Shield. These
activities include Swimming Sports, Athletic Sports, House Drama/Music,
winter sports and summer sports.
Each House is led by a Captain and Deputy voted at the end of the previous
year.

House Drama/Music

On alternate years, House Drama and House Music is held as a competition.
Many of the girls love getting involved in each of these activities and
performing them with great gusto.
House Drama can have a theme of fairytales for the adaptable script
and each Captain would chose the genre and decade for which their
Drama would be set. The results are always hilarious as the girls enjoy
performing roles such as a fairy godmother, the emperor (with new clothes!!!),
a princess (who sleeps on a pea) and ugly step-sisters with costumes from
decades that included the 60's, 70's and 80's. Each Drama lasts 15mins, and creates a night of dramatic
fun for both cast and audience.
House Music is another House event that fills the school hall.
Songs, mimed poems, lip sinc and items including performing a dance routine are prepared by the five Houses, once again
with great costumes and energy.
Held on the Friday evening of Boarders
Weekend in June (a time their parents come to visit) these events are popular shows for the
school community to view. |
